I want to live in Tahiti or North Shore of Oahu, and just be a small local, how real is this dream?

I want to live in a shack, I’ll always be out so I don’t need a nice place, and just want to work at a simple surf shop or something simple for some cash. Just live the easy life, you know? How possible is this? Get a simple job, little shack, and live on one of the islands of Hawaii?

Of course you can do that.

I would pick Hawaii over Tahiti, just because it is easier to get yourself established in Hawaii.

Tahiti is pretty neat, but you almost need to be Tahitian or French to work there. I don’t know if there are even any surf shops on Tahiti. It is a coral Atoll and someone who wanted to surf would have to get out beyond the reef to do so. If your interested in Tahiti, I would get a passport and go down there for a visit, but have a return ticket. That way you can check it out and see if it will work for you.

Hawaii would be a lot easier. Heck, your still in the United States. I don’t know how the economy is there right now, but just about anyone can get a job if he will take anything. The surf is great there and if you know about surfing, it shouldn’t be all that hard to get a job in that industry.

There are hundreds of people already in Hawaii who are doing what you want to do, I’m sure that it would be easy to hook up with some of them and learn the ropes.

Two things. Native Hawaiians don’t necessarily like people from the mainland who move to Hawaii. Some of them think that Hawaii ought to be for Hawaiians. Be aware of that attitude. Second, I’ve known people who have moved there, not liked it and returned to the mainland. They call it “island Fever” and it involves being confined on an island surrounded by ocean, and there being no change of seasons.

I’ve been there four times and never had island fever, but the longest I have been there is about two weeks.
